Inmates within the Texas correctional system can be located online, by telephone or by mail.

In today's Information Age, finding where someone lives can be as easy as clicking a mouse and typing a few words into a search engine. Before the Internet, obtaining information from a government organization was typically time-consuming and required a succession of phone calls. Today, finding information from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) system is streamlined, thanks to their website. To find an inmate in the Texas corrections system, the TDCJ asks for basic information about the offender and the search is completed online, by telephone or by mail.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather as much of the following information about the offender as possible: last name, first name, race, Texas Department of Criminal Justice number, State ID number and sex.

    • 2

Request the TDCJ and State ID number, if you do not know them, by calling the TDCJ with the offender's name, race, sex and date of birth. If you do not know the exact date of birth, provide the approximate age and the name of the county where they were convicted.

    • 3

Obtain general information about the inmate, including location, by using the Texas Department of Criminal Justice offender information database. The information available through the database is: TDCJ number, offender location, offense of conviction, incarceration history (offense, county and court of conviction), current incarceration (offense, county and court of conviction) and the projected release date.

    • 4

Contact the city or county correction system to locate an inmate confined in a Texas city or county jail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only offenders who are currently incarcerated in a TDCJ facility or parolees are included in the online database.

  • Requesting an inmate's location is free.
