How to Write Outlines for Descriptive Essays

How to Write Outlines for Descriptive Essays thumbnail
Be sure you know your subject thoroughly before writing a descriptive essay.

Descriptive essays convey information to the reader by using vivid imagery and sensory details. Organizing your ideas is crucial in composing a quality piece of work that will help the reader understand the topic as well as being able to view it the way you intended. A well-constructed outline will help keep your ideas on track and relevant to the topic.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down everything you know about the topic. If you are describing a scene or the way you felt about a dramatic event in your life, write phrases or words that accurately depict the situation.

    • 2

Narrow the focus of your topic by choosing no more than five details to describe. For example, if the essay describes your visit to the Grand Canyon, you may want to include size, color, landscape and the view as items for elaboration.

    • 3

Write an introduction that includes the thesis or topic sentence. This does not have to be lengthy. It should clearly and simply state what is being described and give the reader a preview of what he will learn.

    • 4

Organize your details into headings and subtopics. Writers usually label headings with letters and subtopics with numbers. Headings consist of the main ideas of each paragraph while subtopics are the supporting details.

    • 5

Write a concluding statement. This can be the actual passage you will write in the essay itself or a brief restatement of the topic. It basically sums up your thoughts and feelings on the topic being described.
