Every laptop LCD screen contains a small light bulb built into the screen that allows you to view images and graphics. This bulb is called the backlight. When the backlight lamp starts to burn out, or burns out completely, your screen will appear dim or completely black. Replacing the backlight in your Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop requires that you completely dismantle the display panel and remove the LCD screen. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn off your laptop using the operating system. Disconnect the AC power cable from its socket. Disconnect and remove any other cables and external devices from the computer.

      Place the laptop face down with the front edge facing forward. Remove the battery pack from its compartment on the bottom of the laptop. Remove the two Phillips head screws from the upper right and left corners of the laptop's bottom casing. Remove the two Phillips head screws from the laptop's back panel.

      Place the laptop face up, then open the display panel as far as possible. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry the LCD hinge cover from the laptop. The hinge cover is the plastic piece situated between the LCD and keyboard assemblies.

      Grasp the top edge of the keyboard, then lift it out of the laptop slightly. Place the keyboard face down on the palm rest. Disconnect the large ribbon cable that extends from the keyboard to the motherboard. Remove the keyboard.

      Remove the metal cover from the left side of the laptop's upper casing. This cover is fastened to the laptop by four Phillips head screws, and conceals the cooling fan, wireless module and video card.

      Use a pair of tweezers to disconnect the two antenna cables from the wireless module. Spread the retaining clips on each end of the module, then remove it from the laptop.

      Disconnect all cables extending from the left side of the display panel to the motherboard. Carefully lift the entire display panel off of the laptop's base. Set it aside on a flat surface with the screen facing upward.

      Use a small, flat head screwdriver to remove the six rubber screw covers from the display assembly's front panel. The front panel is the plastic cover on the front of the LCD screen. Remove the six Phillips head screws from the front panel. Remove the panel from the display assembly.

      Remove the four Phillips head screws from either side of the LCD screen. Carefully lift the screen out of the display assembly. Disconnect the large ribbon cable from the back side of the screen, then disconnect the other end of the ribbon cable from the inverter board. The inverter board is a small circuit board near the bottom edge of the screen's back side.

      Peel away the foil tape lining the bottom edge of the laptop's back side. Remove the metal backlight housing also lining the bottom edge of the screen. Carefully lift the backlight out of the screen.

      Use a soldering iron to unsolder the wire connectors from each end of the removed backlight lamp. Dispose of the bad backlight lamp.

      Reverse this procedure to install the new backlight lamp. Use the soldering iron and some solder to transfer the wire connectors from the old backlight lamp to the replacement backlight before re-assembling the screen.
