How to Hunt Squirrels With Air Rifles

Air rifles are fine for hunting squirrels.

Newer-style air guns shoot further and faster than older models. The increased velocity brings air rifles into the realm of small game hunting. Matching the air gun and ammo to the size of the small game increases you chances of a successful hunt. Squirrels are the right-size game for air rifle hunting. Finding the areas squirrels feed and nest will provide you a starting point for your hunt.

Things You'll Need

• Camouflage hat
• Camouflage face mask
• .177 pellets

Instructions

1. Don a camouflage hat and face mask. Walk into a wooded area away from people and houses. Load a .177 caliber pellet into your air rifle. Turn on the gun's safety. Pressurize the firing chamber by pumping the gun.

2. Locate an area containing nut bearing trees including hazel, chestnut, walnut and oak. Examine the hunting area for a safe shooting direction. Stand against a tree or sit down. Stay still for 15 to 20 minutes while waiting for the squirrels to calm down from you entering their area.

3. Aim at a squirrel when one comes into view. Do not fire until it moves to a spot with a backstop. A backstop will ensure that should you miss the pellet will not travel to an area with people.

4. Squeeze the trigger of the air rifle when you have a safe shot at the head of the squirrel. A head shot will kill the squirrel quickly and humanely.

Tips & Warnings

• Check your local hunting regulations for hunting seasons on the type of squirrel you are hunting.

• A hunting license may be required in your area when hunting certain types of squirrels.

• Never point the muzzle of a loaded or unloaded air rifle toward a person.

• Air rifles should only be used by adults or children of hunting age.
