How to Handle a Drowned ATV Motor
When you submerge an ATV, water enters the engine through the air intake, exhaust and drain valves you must drain and dry the entire inside of the engine. Two-stroke engines are much more simple to handle then four-stroke engines, but the process is similar. You will need the correct tools to tear down the engine and other components. This is a time consuming job that requires an extensive knowledge of the engine that you are working on.
Things You'll Need
- Ratchet set
- Drain pan
- Screwdriver
- New engine oil
- New transmission fluid
- New gas

Place the drain pan under the crankcase. Remove the drain plug and drain the oil in the pan. Repeat this process for the transmission fluid. With both drain plugs removed, turn the engine over manually eight or ten time to flush the engine.

Remove the carburetor according to that specific ATV model. Drain the gas in the carburetor and the gas tank in a drain container.

Remove the air filter and allow the water to evaporate. Remove the bolts and screw securing the exhaust to the ATV. Pour out any water inside the exhaust.

Turn the ATV up side down and turn the engine over manually five times. Allow the engine to to dry out for three or four days. Clean the inside and floater inside the carburetor.

Replace all of the components in the reverse order you removed them. Fill the engine with fresh gas, oil and transmission fluid.
