How to Tighten an Alternator Belt on a 2002 Hyundai Accent

The 2002 Hyundai Accent engine comes with either a single or a double overhead camshaft. The single camshaft engine is rated at 1.5 liter, while the double camshaft design is 1.6 liter. Both have the same alternator and use the same double belt system. The alternator is located on the left side of the engine bay in the front of the engine. The alternator is halfway down the front of the engine and readily accessible. By loosening two bolts, you can tighten the belt.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable to avoid accidental sparks. Loosen the upper adjustment bolt on the upper alternator bracket. Loosen the lower alternator pivot bolt.

    • 2

Place a suitable pry bar against the back of the alternator and against the engine block. Be careful to avoid the alternator wires. Pull back to tighten the belt, being sure to leave 1/2 an inch to 1 inch of belt deflection. Overtightening the belt will shorten its life and damage the alternator bearings.

    • 3

Tighten the upper bracket bolt while maintaining tension on the belt with the pry bar. Once tight, set the pry bar aside and tighten the lower bolt. Reinstall the negative battery cable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Inspect the belt for glazing, cracks or splits. Replace the belt if any defects are present.
