How to Set Up RDP in XP Home Edition

RDP stands for Remote Desktop Protocol and is the method of communication used by the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client. Windows XP is able to connect to Windows server and professional computers using the built-in remote desktop client, but it is not able to act as a Remote Desktop server. You can connect using RDP from the built-in Remote Desktop Connection software that is installed with Windows XP.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the Windows "Start" menu, then click "All Programs," "Accessories" and "Communications." Click on "Remote Desktop Connection."

    • 2

Type the network name or Internet Protocol address of the Windows computer you would like to connect to.

    • 3

Press "Enter" and your Windows XP Home computer will send an RDP request to the specified server. If the Remote Desktop server is running you will see a Windows login dialog box. You must log in with an administrator's account to use the desktop remotely.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may close the RDP session you established by opening the "Start" menu and clicking "Log Off" from the remote computer.
