How to Determine Whether I'm Using the Online or Desktop Version of TurboTax

TurboTax is a product of the software company Intuit, which also produces the accounting and personal finance software Quicken. TurboTax comes in online and desktop versions with different price structures. Both the online and desktop versions come in Basic, Deluxe, Premier and Home & Business editions. You must pick an edition that has the ability to fill out the tax forms you need.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out how you paid for TurboTax, if you've paid already. With the online version, you don't pay until you file your return. You pay for the desktop version up front.

    • 2

Notice how you access TurboTax. If you use an internet browser to access TurboTax through the official website or through your bank, credit union or other financial institution, and if you have to sign in before you can use the program, you have the online version. If you open a program on your computer that's not your internet browser, you have the desktop version.

    • 3

Count the number of TurboTax accounts you have, if you file more than one federal tax return. Online TurboTax users must sign in under a different account for each federal return. The desktop version allows you to e-file up to five federal tax returns through the one program.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you ever receive a notice on your screen that TurboTax needs to download updates, you have the desktop version. The online version of TurboTax updates automatically.
