Instructions

    • 1

Use the longest circular needle you can find and cast on 120 stitches. For the first row, knit all of your stitches, then purl all of your stitches on the following row; this is known as the stockinette stitch. Follow this pattern for a total of four rows.

    • 2

Knit an increase row. To do this, knit the first stitch and then repeat this pattern across the row: Knit through the front and back of one stitch, knit the next stitch. End with a knit stitch.

    • 3

Continue in stockinette stitch for five more rows, then knit another increase row. Repeat this step again.

    • 4

Make one more purl row after your last increase row, then bind off on the next knit row. Cut your working yarn and weave in your loose ends.

    • 5

Place the finished scarf inside a pillow case and tie the case closed. Put this into a hot water wash in your washing machine, then place it in the dryer on high heat. Repeat this step as often as needed until your scarf has fully felted; you will know it has felted if you cannot see the individual stitches in the knit fabric any more.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try this same scarf in garter stitch next; for garter stitch, knit every row instead of purling the even rows.

  • Add more or fewer increase rows to increase or decrease how drastic your scarf's ruffle is.
