Instructions

    • 1

Before leaving home, be sure you know your e-mail configuration and your password. To find this out, open your e-mail program.

    • 2

Look for commands labeled Settings, Accounts, or Options.

    • 3

Once you find the settings (properties) information for your e-mail account, note the POP server name. (The POP server is where your e-mail resides.)

    • 4

Note your e-mail password and user name.

    • 5

Look for the same commands at your friend's computer: Settings, Accounts or Options.

    • 6

Some progams will let you set up multiple e-mail accounts. If that's the case, use the POP, username, and password information you have to set up a new account. Otherwise, change your friend's information to your information. (Write down your friend's info first!)

    • 7

      Check your mail as usual.

    • 8

Change the settings back to your friend's original configuration after you're finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your friend's e-mail software has this option, set it to "leave mail on server" when you transfer your mail. Then, when you check your mail at home again, the same messages will download.

  • If your friend's e-mail software doesn't have a "leave on server" option, there are two ways to transfer your e-mail messages back to your home computer.

  • The first method is to forward or redirect the messages to your own e-mail address. When you check your e-mail at home, the forwarded messages will download.

  • The second method is to save the messages as a text file and copy them onto a diskette. Take the diskette home and copy the messages onto your hard disk.

  • If you do not delete your e-mail messages on the remote computer, they will be available for the next user to read. If you forget to remove your personal e-mail configurations from the distant computer, another person will be able to access your e-mail account.

  • If you send mail from your friend's computer, change the name and "Reply To" address so it's clear that the message is coming from you. These settings can usually be found in the same menu as the POP server. Change them back to their original settings when done.
