Lower the Water Temperature of a Swamp Cooler

A swamp cooler, or evaporative cooler, uses evaporation to cool air and redistribute the cooler air into the surrounding area. Swamp coolers bring air into the unit and pull the air through a set of pads that are soaked in water. The air temperature is reduced through the process of evaporation and then circulated as cooler air. Swamp coolers are available online, in hardware stores, home repair stores and certain home appliance stores. Using a swamp cooler is fairly simple, as is performing steps such as lowering the water temperature in the swamp cooler. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Add 1 tsp. of dishwashing liquid to the water in the swamp cooler water tank. This improves the absorption of the water through the filter pads, reducing the temperature of the water.

    • 2

Turn off the swamp cooler and unplug the unit from the power supply. Remove the access screen in the rear of the unit and pull out the filter. Use a small vacuum to suction excess dirt and dust from the filter, which can prevent the swamp cooler from working effectively. A clean filter will help reduce the water temperature inside the swamp cooler. Place the filter back into the unit and close the rear screen.

    • 3

Ensure there are no obstructions such as furniture, drapes, toys or other objects that may block the intake or output vents on the swamp cooler, as this will cause reduced effectiveness and will increase the overall temperature of the water.

    • 4

Use cold tap water when filling the water tank on the unit. This will help reduce the overall temperature of the water inside the swamp cooler, as well as the air that is circulated out of the unit.

    • 5

Turn the thermostat on the swamp cooler to a lower temperature, if the unit contains a thermostat. Note that not all swamp coolers contain a thermostat control.
