How to Do "Squared" on a Scientific Calculator thumbnail
Scientific calculators have a squared button.

Squaring a number refers to multiplying a number by itself. For example, five squared would be the same thing as saying five times five. The "squared" function comes in handy when figuring the area of a square because the length and the width are equal. Using a scientific calculator makes it very easy to compute a squared function because they have a squared button.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear your calculator by pressing the on button, sometimes labeled "AC."

    • 2

Enter the number you want to square. For example, if you want to square seven, you would enter "7."

    • 3

Press the squared button on your calculator, usually denoted as "x^2," and your calculator will show the answer. In this example, after you pressed the squared button you would see "49."
