How to Get the Tracking Map on "Pokemon Pearl"
The Marking Map in "Pokémon Pearl" is a tracking map, one of 25 Pokétch applications you receive during the "Pearl" game. The applications run on the DS touch screen when you aren't in battle. Pokétch applications provide information about Pokémon, your surroundings or offer status checks on different aspects of the game. The Marking Map is used to track rare Pokémon that run from you the first time you meet them. The only way to locate the Pokémon once they flee is to watch the map for their icons and travel to the new location for battle.

Tips & Warnings
To release Mesprit so you can track it on the marking map, visit Spear Pillar. Then approach Mesprit at Lake Verity where it will flee from you as soon as you press the "A" button to talk to it. Once it flees, the chase is on.
For Cresselia to appear on the Marking Map, you must first approach it on Fullmoon Island where it will flee from you like Mesprit did. Fullmoon Island becomes accessible via boat from Canalave City after you defeat the Pokémon champions and receive the National Pokédex.
Try not to obsess too much about catching these elusive Pokémon. Patience and timing is everything. Monitor the map periodically as you continue your regular adventures in the game and pursue Mesprit or Cresselia when they move close to your location or within easy walking distance. If you miss them, don't worry. You will have another chance.
The president of the Pokétch Company will not give you the Marking Map until you beat the Hearthome City gym.
Do not try to fly to the moving Pokémon's location to catch it. Flying forces it to jump to a new location away from you. Walking or surfing across the water is the only way to encounter and catch the Pokémon you see on the Marking Map.
Do not expect to catch Mesprit or Cresselia in the first battle. It may take many encounters to whittle down their hit points (HP) enough so they stay in the Pokeball you throw at them.
Lower the target Pokémon's HP with caution. If you accidentally knock out Mesprit or Cresselia in battle they will not appear in the game again. Save your game before each battle so if this does happen you can turn your game off without saving and get the Pokémon back.
