How to Get Rid of Web Ads on My Desktop

With so many people using the Internet in their day-to-day lives, advertisers have the opportunity to use the Web to gain awareness of their products and services. While you can't completely eliminate ads (for example, if you want to watch a video on a network's website, you'll still be asked to watch the commercial first), you can eliminate ads on Web pages on your desktop computer with a simple code.

Things You'll Need

• Notepad (on Windows) or another text editor

Instructions

1. Search your computer for the file named "C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts."

2. Open it in a text editor, preferably Notepad. Avoid Microsoft Word or WordPad.

3. Browse over to http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt. Copy and paste the entire contents into the Notepad file you have opened, overwriting existing codes.

4. Save the file without changing the file name.

5. Restart your Web browser. You should now be free of ads.
