How to Replace a Chevrolet Silverado Pickup Truck Fuel Pump
The Chevy Silverado engine operates partly through the use of an electric fuel pump that sends fuel to the engine to keep it running smoothly. If the pump becomes clogged or any of the fuses within the pump fail, you may need to replace the fuel pump in order to keep your Silverado running efficiently. The Silverado comes in a variety of models, which can affect the exact type of fuel pump you use, but the process for replacing one is the same across all models.

Refer to your owner's manual for the exact model of Chevy Silverado you are driving. Contact your local auto parts dealer to order a new fuel pump. Ensure that you have the proper pump for your model and engine size prior to removing the old one, as installing the wrong fuel pump can cause damage to the engine.

Park your Chevy Silverado in a flat area and set the parking brake. Chock the wheels for additional safety if desired. Open the hood of the vehicle and locate the fuel pump. Disconnect the battery from the engine with a wrench. Loosen the fuel line that connects to the pump with a wrench or socket and drain it into the drip pan. Use the fuel pump wrench to remove the retaining ring for the sender assembly and remove the fuel strainer.

Squeeze the locking tangs keeping the fuel level sensor in place and remove it. Remove the entire fuel pump from its mounting bracket. Open the new fuel pump box and remove the pump and all the accessories. Reverse the process to install the new pump. Take extra care with replacing the fuel strainer, and make sure the fuel pump is tightly in place by torqueing the mounting brackets and firmly turning the fuel pump wrench over the pump itself once it is in place.
