How to Zero a M16A2 Rifle
It is important to make sure your M16 rifle is zeroed regardless of whether you use it for hunting or sporting purposes. This is a simple task but it must be undertaken under strict circumstances for best results. Accuracy should be achieved on 300 and 25-meter targets with a reasonable amount of ammunition
Things You'll Need
- M16A2
- Ammunition
- 300-m target
- Access to a 25-m shooting range
- Sandbags for support
Instructions
-
-
1
Set the windage indicator to the "0/2" mark, indicating use between zero and 200 meters. Set the elevation knob at the "8/3" alignment.
-
2
Adjust the front sight so it is level with the top of the sight-post well. This is achieved by depressing the dimple in front of the post and rotating it.
-
-
3
Rotate the elevation knob clockwise one turn past the "8/3" mark. The rifle is now set to what is called "mechanical zero."
-
4
Fire a group of shots, normally 3 to 5 rounds, at the 300-meter target at the end of the 25-meter range.
-
5
Adjust your sights according to where the grouping fell on the target. Use the windage settings on the rear sight for lateral movement and the front post sight for any changes in elevation. This is to ensure the factory settings for range stay accurate on the rear sight.
-
6
Fire additional groupings and continue to adjust windage and front sights until you are satisfied that the rifle is zeroed.
