How to Remove the Brake Handle in a '65 Mustang

The 1965 Ford Mustang came equipped with a mechanical parking brake that locked the driver's-side brake when activated. Unlike later Mustangs, which had the driver apply the brake with a foot pedal, the '65 Mustang instead featured a parking brake handle. With repeated use, the handle tends to bend and the handle's rubber covering cracks. Fortunately, removing the old handle to replace it takes only a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the Mustang on a flat surface and, if equipped with the automatic transmission, place the transmission in the "Park" position.

    • 2

Apply the parking brake by pulling up and back on the handle.

    • 3

Remove the set screw from the base of the underside of the handle by rotating it in a counterclockwise direction with a hex wrench.

    • 4

Rotate the handle clockwise while pulling it until it detaches from its rod.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not rotate the handle counterclockwise, which could cause the parking brake to disengage.
