Maintaining the proper oil level will help keep your engine running smoothly.

Motor oil is the internal combustion engine's most important liquid. Running out of gas is an inconvenience you will probably laugh about later; running out of oil will bring you to tears as you pay for a replacement engine. Motor oil cools, cleans and lubricates your engine's moving parts, and regular oil changes are a relatively inexpensive way to improve your engine's performance and longevity. You should check your oil level between oil changes and add oil if it is needed. Adding oil to your engine is a simple task that requires only basic mechanical ability.

Instructions

Open the hood. Check the oil level using the dipstick. Pull out the dipstick, dry it with the rag and reinsert. Remove it again to get an accurate reading. Location varies by model, but most dipsticks are at the left front of the engine. The oil level should be between the "Min" and "Max" marks found on the lower end of the dipstick.

Locate the oil fill cap atop the engine. Turn it counterclockwise to remove it, and set it aside. Insert the funnel.

    • 3

Pour a quart of motor oil into the funnel and allow it to drain completely. Wait a few minutes and recheck the oil level. Add more oil if it is still near "Min." Recheck the level and continue adding oil until it is near "Max" but not over.

Remove the funnel, replace the oil fill cap and wipe away any spilled oil. Close the hood.
