Gather sketches and paintings of a phoenix--either through a search engine or in books--to reference while drawing. Choose pictures depicting the phoenix in various positions and colors.

Practice drawing all the parts of the phoenix: the head, neck, wings, body, feathers, eyes and talons. Sketch the body parts from different angles and practice drawing the parts to scale. Also, work on the flames that surround the bird.
