How to Become a Missouri High School Baseball Umpire

Becoming an umpire is a way to stay involved with baseball, work with high school students and make extra money. High school game officials must be credentialed before being approved to officiate sporting events. The Missouri State High School Activities Association has certain qualifications to meet before you can call balls and strikes.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out the application on the Missouri State High School Athletics Activities Association website. You must also include a check payable to MSHSAA for $55 for your first sport official license.

    • 2

Study for the license exam. Upon receipt of the application and license fee, the MSHSAA will send you a study packet to prepare for an exam on the rules of high school baseball.

    • 3

Take the open-book exam for baseball. You must score at least 75 percent or above to get your license. If you fail, you may try two more times, but you may not attempt the exam more than three times per year.

    • 4

Officiating licenses through the MSHSAA are good for one year. Each year, you are required to renew your license, complete a Part II Rules exam for baseball if it is offered, attend an annual rules meeting and an officials mechanics clinic, if offered, during your first three years of umpiring.
