How to Make a Raw Silk Trim for a Purse
Raw silk is a classic way to add detail in sewing projects, including fashion, children's clothes and daily items. This kind of fabric makes a decorative statement on such accessories as wraps, dresses and purses. Raw silk retains the protective layer around the silk thread which gives the cloth a more rustic and earthy feel than processed silks. It helps to add a personal statement to your handbag or clutch. 1
Measure the purse to which you would like to attach silk trim. There are many styles of purses and many options for adding trim, such as the overhanging lip of the purse or around the seams. Measure the length and width of the area and add an inch to these measurements.
-
2
Trace and cut out carefully the raw silk from the measurements you made on the purse. Mimic any curves or shapes of the area on the purse on which you will be adding the trim so that the raw silk fits snugly.

3
Fold over the edges of the cut raw silk twice, each fold equalling about 1/4 inch, and pin down. Do this around the perimeter of the piece. Using a sewing machine, sew around the perimeter following the pins you placed there.

Pin the newly-sewed piece to the purse you will be working with, following the contours carefully. Sew it in place using the thread and needle. Use a thread that matches the silk you are attaching to the purse.

Tips & Warnings
Work slowly and carefully as silk is slippery and very delicate.
Practice making your trim with a cheaper fabric before you start working with silk
Buy a couple different colors of the silk to play with colors that will work with your purse design
Be careful to sew the silk only once as pulling out stitches from this type of fabric will damage it.
