How do I Install Hinges on a Spring-Loaded Full Door?

Being able to install door hinges is a must have skill for any handy man's repertoire. Installing hinges on a spring-loaded door is a similar process to installing hinges on a regular door, albeit with spring-load hinges. To install these types of hinges, you must simply mark where you wish the hinges to be located on the door, chisel out the mortise for the hinge to be placed in and mount the hinge on the door itself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 5 inches from the top of the door and mark the location on the edge of the door with the pencil. Measure 10 inches from the bottom of the door and mark this location as well. This is where the outer edge of each hinge will be located.

    • 2

Place the lower hinge on the door so that the edge of the hinge closest to the bottom of the door is lined up with the mark you made in Step 1. Score around the perimeter of the hinge with the penknife. Do the same with the upper hinge.

    • 3

Use a hammer and chisel to chisel out the area you scored for each hinge in Step 2. Chisel each area out to a depth equal to the depth of the hinge. This will create a "mortised" or recessed area to place the hinges in so that they are flush with the rest of the door.

    • 4

Place each hinge into its mortised area. Use a pencil to mark the hole locations for each hinge. Remove the hinges from the mortised areas.

    • 5

Use a screw gun and a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw you will use to hold the hinge in place to drill screw holes at each of the hole locations you marked in Step 4.

    • 6

Place the hinges back into the mortised areas. Secure the hinges to the door with a screw gun, a Phillips-head screw bit and the screws that came with the hinges.

    • 7

Hold the door up to the door frame and score the location for the hinges on the door frame (similar to the process used in Step 2).

    • 8

Mortise the hinge locations on the door frame.

    • 9

Mark the screw hole locations and drill them out with a drill bit smaller than the screw you will be using.

    • 10

Secure the door to the door frame with the screws that came with the hinges.
