How to Disable a Windows XP File Sync

The XP file sync feature in Windows XP allows users to continuously update files without being present at the computer. This feature is highly useful for office and businesses. The files are updated when the computer connects to the Internet. Therefore it is an ideal solution for a system that goes down periodically. Unfortunately, this feature can also become a hassle. It can synchronize unnecessary folders and cause data loss. Disabling it is wise for those who do not need it. Most issues with XP file sync occur when Microsoft XP is used with the Microsoft Windows Server.

Disabling XP File Sync

1. Sign in as administrator into the controller computer. This is the computer that has XP file sync enabled. Then log in as administrator into the Windows server operating system as well. From here you will disable the logoff synchronization.

2. Open the "Start" menu and then go to "Control Panel." Select the "Administrative Tools" option. Then proceed to open the "Active directory users and computers" option.

3. Enter the domain for the windows server once the console opens. Right-click to open an option called "Properties." Select this option to proceed to "Group Policies."

4. Open "Computer Configuration" within group policies. This option will open a further tab known as "Administrative template." After opening that, select the network and offline files. On the right side of the window you will have an option to disable "Synchronize all offline file before logging off." Once it is clicked, select "Apply" and close the window.

5. Open "My Computer" and access "Tools" in the menu bar to disable logon and logoff synchronization. Then proceed to "Folder options" and choose "Offline files." Deselect the box that describes the logging in and off synchronization options.

Disabling Logon and Logoff Synchronization Using Registry Keys

1. Open the Run command console and type in "regedit." This will open the registry editor. Use the search option to find the registry "SyncAtLogon." Once it is found, right click the registry and set the registry value to "0."

2. Set the registry value of the registry "SyncAtLogoff" to "0" to disable logoff synchronization.

3. Save both settings and restart the computer.

Tips & Warnings

• Altering incorrect registry keys can lead to severe system instability. Therefore only attempt the registry method if you are proficient with your PC's registry. Disabling these features can speed up your operating systems performance considerably.
