How to Drive a Manual Highway Truck

Driving a manual transmission truck on the highway is slightly different than driving a comparable manual transmission car, as a highway truck does not have synchromesh gears. This means you will have to learn how to double clutch and rev match in order to drive smoothly. This takes time to learn, but if you have experience driving a manual car, getting started on a highway truck should only take you a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Press in the clutch and shift the vehicle into first gear.

    • 2

Release the clutch slowly while applying enough pressure on the gas pedal to bring the engine speed up to the RPM speed you will need in first gear.

    • 3

Press in the clutch to shift to neutral when the tachometer reaches the redline. Release the clutch to drop the engine revs.

    • 4

Press in the clutch to shift into second gear. Apply enough pressure on the gas pedal to bring the engine speed up to the RPM speed you will need in second gear. Release the clutch slowly to complete the shift. Repeat alternating the use of the clutch to shift between neutral and the next highest gears, as well as the gas to match RPM speed with current gear. For example, from second to third, or third to fourth gears.

    • 5

Use the same procedure to downshift the truck, remembering to rev the engine to the speed it will need in the decreasing gears.
