Hash browns, or fried grated potatoes, are a favorite staple breakfast side dish. Hash browns are simple to cook, and knowing the proper method will make average hash browns come out golden brown and crispy. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Frying pan
  • 1 lb. potatoes
  • Oil
  • Spatula
  • Bowl
  • Ice
  • Paper towels
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Instructions

      Peel and grate 1 lb. of potatoes and place in a bowl. Fill the bowl with ice water. This will prevent browning, remove excess starches and make the grated potatoes crispier. Set aside for 30 minutes, then strain.

      Heat up your frying pan on medium-high heat. Carefully pour 1/2 cup of oil in the pan. Let the oil heat up for a few minutes.

      Place the grated potatoes in the frying pan. Press the grated potatoes down with the spatula to create a thin even layer on the bottom of the pan. Season them with your desired amount of pepper and salt.

      Cook the hash browns for about 7 to 10 minutes or until they are golden brown. Flip the hash browns over and cook for another 7 to 10 minutes.

      Transfer the hash browns to a plate covered with paper towels and serve immediately.
