Macrame Knot Tying Tutorial
Macrame is the art of making decorative knot designs. With some basic materials the variations of designs are endless. The material for macrame is any thread, string or rope that you can find at an arts and crafts store. While there are many variations and types of knots the square knot is a good starting point for beginners.

Basic Square Knot

1
Wrap the two macrame cords around the dowel or ring from the middle so that you have four, even length, strands hanging down. This is to create a foundation for the thread to be pulled from and you do not need to tie the cords to the dowel. The two cords on the outside are called the "working" strands and the two on the inside are called the "filler" strands.
-
2
Cross the left working cord over the filler cords and underneath the right working cord.
-
-
3
Loop the right working cord underneath the two filler cords but over the curved left working cord.
-
4
Loop the right working cord, now on the left side, down and back across the two filler cords. This is the same action performed as in step two, so the crossing cord goes underneath the two filler cords.
-
5
Cross the left working cord, which is now right of the filler cords, underneath the right working cord and above the filler cords.
-
6
Hold the filler cords together snugly and tighten the working cords to form the knot.
