How to Become an Optician Training Specialist

Opticians study facial fetaures of patients to determine the best glasses for them.

An optician fills eye wear prescriptions written by an optometrist. An optician fills orders to help ophthalmic technicians write prescriptions correctly. Opticians also help patients select the frames and lens styles that work best for them. To get certified as an optician, you'll need to have a GED or high school diploma and complete an accredited optician program. An accredited optician program is a one- to two-year certificate, diploma or associate's degree program. Opticians must recertify every three years.

Becoming an Optician

1. Graduate from high school with a diploma or get a GED.

2. Enroll in an accredited optician program to receive certification training. A list of these programs is available on the All Allied Health Schools website.

3. Take a national certification test for opticians. According to All Allied Health Schools, "The American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) offer national certification and testing for opticians."

4. Get recertified after three years and every three years. You can do this by taking a recertification test. The eye care office where you work can set up where and when you take your test.

Becoming a Training Specialist

1. Get an associate's degree in optometry. Opticians who want to become trainers and teach others to become opticians have to get more than just a certification to be an optician.

2. Go through management training at your current job, if the company offers it. If not, your office or workplace should keep a list of places that train opticians for management. You can also look on the Education Portal website and the Allied Health website.

3. Apply for trainer or instructor positions being offered at various schools or certification classes. Your associate's degree as an optician, certification as an optician and management training are enough to get you the position.
