Computer speakers must be properly connected.

Internet Explorer and Firefox are software applications used to browse the World Wide Web. Occasionally, a browser will experience hardware or software problems that cause the sound not to play on your computer system. Updating the software drivers for your sound card and checking to make sure all hardware is properly connected will often resolve sound problems. Internet Explorer 6 is an older version of Microsoft's browser and updating to a new, more stable version may help; likewise, Firefox users may be able to resolve sound problems by upgrading to the latest version.

Instructions

  1. Troubleshooting Sound Hardware

    • 1

Check the volume on your computer by clicking on the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of the screen. Click on "mixer" and make sure none of the applications such as Firefox or Internet Explorer are muted. Increase the main volume and make sure it is not muted.

    • 2

Confirm that your speakers are plugged in and connected to your computer. If your computer has internal speakers, check to make sure they are not muted.

    • 3

Increase the volume on the speakers connected to your computer. Most speakers have a knob on the front you can turn to increase or decrease volume.

    • 4

Update your sound card drivers. To do this, click "Start," "Control Panel," go to the "Hardware" tab and click "Device Manager." Under "Sound, video and game controllers," double-click on the sound card and go to the "Drivers" tab. Click "Update Driver Software." If you have Windows 7, right-click on the sound card rather than double-clicking. Click "Properties" and go to the "General Tab." Look at the "Device Status" box to see if there are problems with the sound card. If there are problems, follow the instructions in Section 2 for updating Windows, which will update your sound drivers.
