Survey the range of Leica binoculars. They come in five series. Duovid binoculars switch between magnifications with a simple adjustment of the eyepiece rings. Geovid binoculars feature an internal rangefinder that measures up to several hundred yards. Trinovid binoculars weigh less than nine ounces, and are suitable for hiking, birdwatching, or observing wildlife. Ultravid binoculars are higher end, and feature a 42-layer coating on the prism that provides almost 100 percent light transmission. Ultravid HD binoculars have the highest quality lenses and can function in temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Fahrenheit.

Evaluate the magnification and lens size on each model. When considering a 7x42 binocular, the first number represents magnification. An advantage of lower magnification is a wider and brighter image. Magnifications of 10 and above make hand-held use difficult because of the shaking factor. The second number describes the diameter of the lens in millimeters. The larger the diameter of the lens, the more light is gathered to define the image. A 7x42mm lens has more than three times the light-gathering ability of a 7x25mm binocular.

Consider the ways in which you plan to use your binoculars. Hikers and birdwatchers prefer lightweight models like the Trinovid, though some intrepid birdwatchers don't mind carrying the extra weight of a Duovid for higher definition and the increased light input provided by a larger lens. Hunters will want waterproof binoculars armored against bumps and scrapes. Since they are out at dawn or dusk, a larger lens size is a must. They will need lower magnification (7x or 8x) for a wider view and less fumbling with the focus. Leica 8x42 Ultravid HD / Black Armored Binoculars would be a good choice. The 50mm Duovid is especially suited for astronomical viewing, and the necessary tripod adapter is included with the binoculars.

Consult your budget and calculate how much you're willing to spend for your new binoculars. Leicas are among the finest binoculars available and you will pay a higher price for the quality they afford. Prices for Leica binoculars range from between $450.00 (the Trinovid) and $2,800.00 (the Duovid).

Tips & Warnings

  • All Leica binoculars are waterproof, fog proof and submersible up to 16.5 feet.

  • If you are going to hand-hold your binoculars, 7x , 8x or 10x magnification is recommended. A 15x or higher magnification needs a tripod adapter to steady the image.
