How to Fix Turntable Belts

How to Fix Turntable Belts thumbnail
Some record players use a belt and motor to spin the turntable.

Turntables all work through spinning a record against a needle to produce sound, but there are two types of turntables. Direct drive turntables use a motor to spin the platter holding the record, while belt drive turntables use a rubber belt wrapped around the motor to spin the platter. Eventually, these belts will wear down and break. The belt is directly under the platter.

Instructions

Open up any casing to the record player if it has one. The casing is the plastic shell on the very outside of the player that protects it from dust and other unwanted elements. Take the rubber protective mat for the record off the top of the platter. The rubber mat is the part of the player that the record rests upon while playing, and the platter refers to the part of the player that rotates the record while playing.

Remove the platter from the record player by pulling it up and over the center spindle. The platter will slide up gently, as it is unfastened to anything. This will expose the broken belt. Remove it from the turntable.

    • 3

Place the replacement belt over the motor pulley. Position the belt so that it is being stretched around the motor pulley and the center piece of the turntable. The belt will appear as if it is being stretched around two poles.

    • 4

Place the platter and cover back on the turntable and rotate to ensure the belt is placed correctly.
