How to Make a Moon Jar

Moon jars can be used to add atmosphere to a nighttime outdoor party. Moon jars work by capturing sunlight all day long via solar garden lights and then glow all night. These eco-friendly light fixtures are also called sun jars, the only difference is different-colored paper or paint is used, such as yellow. Use moon jars to light up a garden party or midnight swim in your pool, or set them around your house to create a romantic setting.

Instructions

    • 1

Take apart the inside of your solar garden lights using a screwdriver and a utility knife. Solar garden lights come in numerous shapes and sizes however choosing small rectangular-shaped lights works best for this project. Solar light components consist of the outer plastic case, a solar cell, a single AA battery, a LED light source, photo resister to sense darkness and a small controller board.

    • 2

Use sticky adhesive/tack to paste the insides of the lights together (everything but the plastic case) and glue them onto the inside of the jar's lid. The solar panel's plastic case should face the top of the lid and its underside will be the base for the rest of the pieces. You can arrange the pieces however you like with the tack on the lid so long as the light-sensing receptor is centered and can be seen from the lid. This will ensure it receives enough light.

    • 3

Use blue, purple or white glass frosting spray to decorate the outside of the jar. If no frosting spray is available, use blue tissue or tracing paper on the inside of the jar. Other colors can be used if desired.

    • 4

Secure the lid to the jar. Place the jar outside or near a well-lit window to soak up the sun's rays. This will enable it to glow throughout the night.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be prepared to work with the solar garden lights until they fit under the glass lid. Do not press them too hard which can cause them to break.
