How to Change PLC Programming

How to Change PLC Programming thumbnail
Factories are the most common place to find PLCs.

PLC (programmable logic controller) programming is used primarily in factories to control the process being used to manufacture the company's product. There are often subtle changes that need to be made to the product being manufactured, and in order to make these changes, the program must be changed. From this monitoring, and occasional changes being made, the company can be assured that they are making the best product they can make.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your communication cord into both the PLC and the PC. If you aren't sure if you have the proper cord, you can verify this with the manufacturer of the PLC.

    • 2

Run the software used to program the PLC on the PC.

    • 3

Make the changes required to the PLC program. Most PLCs have both an online and an offline mode for making changes. If you just have small changes needed, it's usually easier to make them online. Also, with online changes, depending on the PLC, the process doesn't need to be shut down. For offline changes, the program needs to be downloaded from the PLC, the changes made and then uploaded back into the PLC. Either way, the changes will need to be tested after they've been made to verify that the program is now doing what it should.

    • 4

Disconnect the PC from the PLC once the required changes have been made and tested.

Tips & Warnings

  • Making changes to a PLC can create some unexpected problems with the process, so you probably want to pick a day to make changes when there is wiggle room for error.
