Before Windows XP, you had to install special software from Adobe to install Open Type 1 fonts.

In Microsoft Word, there are two different font types: Open Type 1 and True Type. True Type is a font style created by Apple that Microsoft uses as part of its Windows operating system. Open Type 1 is an older type of font that Microsoft and Adobe developed jointly. When Microsoft and Adobe originally developed Open Type 1 fonts, Windows systems could not use the fonts without Adobe Type Manager. Microsoft changed this when it released Windows XP. You can now install Open Type 1 fonts using the Windows Font Control panel.
