How to Survive an EMP Attack

How to Survive an EMP Attack thumbnail
An EMP attack could grind all electric activity to a halt.

According to an EMP Commission report, the launch of an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, attack against the United States would be devastating. The casualty count would be staggering as Americans die from the initial attack. Many others would die from the effects of the attack, such as loss of electricity. Those at risk most would be the elderly and infirm, who, in many cases, rely on electric devices in order to live. However, unless the younger and healthier members of society take certain precautions in the aftermath of an act of nuclear war, they will perish as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Educate yourself. Research the topic. Sites such as secretsofsurvival.com and the EMP Commission Report are effective in articulating the problem. Take notes on the topic.

    • 2

Present the material to your loved ones. Clearly explain what you wish to do to make sure they are secure in the event of an attack. Educate them on what to do.

    • 3

Designate a special cabinet in the kitchen for your canned goods. Place a sign on that area that these canned foods are for use in case of emergency only. Keep a can opener in this cabinet, as well.

    • 4

Set a small percentage of cash aside every time you receive income. Store it in a safe deposit box. Place the key in a safe place where you will easily be able to find it.

    • 5

Designate a storage area for flashlights, batteries and battery-powered devices. Let the rest of your household know where these items are.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always test your equipment. Do this periodically to ensure that, in the event of an attack, all flashlights and other devices are ready for use.

  • According to the Secrets of Survival website, you should make sure that you keep the cords to your electronic appliance as short as possible. The website recommends that these should be 30 inches long or shorter. The same holds true for any televisions bearing antennas. These appliances, because of the metal they contain, attract electromagnetic pulse. The less metal, the less EMP.
