How to Word a Farewell Invitation

When throwing a farewell party, even the invitations become part of the memory-making experience.

Saying good-bye is never easy, so when you sit down to pen the invitations for a farewell party you may find yourself at a loss for words. You want to create a positive and inviting experience for guests who may not be looking forward to sending off someone they love and care about. Even if you're only saying good-bye to an office co-worker, doing it with style and finesse will kick off the party with positivity before it even gets started.

1. Make a list of positive accomplishments or memories of the person you'll be saying farewell to at the party.

2. Read over the list and identify one or two instances everyone you'll be inviting can relate to. It's important to avoid drawing on something only you understand, as it will confuse the invitees and possibly even deter them from attending.

3. Search for a quote or short poem about saying good-bye to print on the front of the invitation. Try to find a positive reflection that suggests saying good-bye doesn't mean forever.

4. Write your personal invitation on the inside of the invitation, for example, starting off with: "Join us as we wish Pam well on her journey into a new life..." You may wish to include the fond memory or accomplishment from step one in this brief introduction. Keep it short and to the point.

5. Include specific details about the time, date, location and instructions such as dress requirements, RSVP preferences and contact information, and whether guests are required to bring gifts or potluck dishes.
