The rear bumper cover on a Mazda Miata needs to be removed if you are replacing it with an aftermarket bumper cover or if the original has been damaged beyond repair and needs replacement. These rear bumper covers are made of a thick and durable plastic and are attached to the Miata by clips and screws. The cover is not difficult to remove and can be done in under one hour.

Step 1

Kneel down next to the rear tires and face the back of the car. Just behind the rear tires there are three Phillips screws in the bumper you need to remove. These are located on both the left and right sides of the car.

Step 2

Open the trunk and look at the bottom rear edge. Pull the carpet up along this edge and locate the seven plastic clips on the floor of the truck. These clips are circular with a smaller circle in the center. Use a flat screwdriver to pry up the center circle. Once this is popped up, pull the entire clip out. Do this for all seven clips.

Step 3

Look underneath the rear of the Miata and locate and remove the four plastic clips along the bottom edge of the bumper cover. These are removed with a flat screwdriver just as the clips inside the trunk.

Step 4

Pull the bumper cover off the car.

Tip

Keep all the small parts in a container so they can be used when reinstalling the bumper cover.
