Things You'll Need:
- Modems
- HyperTerminal Private Edition 5
-
Step 1
Open HyperTerminal (open the Start menu and select Programs, then Accessories, then Communications).
-
Step 2
Enter the telephone number of the computer bulletin board you're going to access.
-
Step 3
Click Dial. The modem will dial the bulletin board and make a connection unless the line is busy or there's some other problem.
-
Step 4
Once connected, you'll see instructions that have been provided by the bulletin board operator (called the sys op). Follow these instructions.
-
Step 5
Move around in the bulletin board until you find the file you want to download. If this is a public bulletin board, there may be a section titled Shareware Files, for example.
-
Step 6
Once you've located the file, follow the bulletin board's instructions for downloading. You may be asked to use the Transfer menu and select Receive File.
-
Step 7
Exit the program to break the connection when you've finished downloading the file.
-
Step 1
You can transfer files from a friend's computer to your own if you're both using HyperTerminal and a telephone modem.
-
Step 2
Phone your friend and ask if he or she will begin the transfer in five minutes. This will give you time to set your computer to receive the file.
-
Step 3
Give your friend the phone number your computer is using.
-
Step 4
Open HyperTerminal. From the Transfer menu, click on Receive File. A window will appear.
-
Step 5
A box will ask where you want to store the file that is to be transferred. Accept the default or use the Browse button to select a different location.
-
Step 6
Select Zmodem as your Transfer Protocol if possible.
-
Step 7
Your friend will then open HyperTerminal and connect to your computer using the phone number you've provided.
-
Step 8
When the two computers are connected, your friend will initiate the file transfer by using Send File Item on the Transfer menu. The transfer will occur.
-
Step 9
Exit or quit the connection when the transfer is complete.
