Setting a strainer in an undermount sink is one of the easier plumbing tasks to attempt. Add to your knowledge of plumbing by setting the sink strainer properly. Does this Spark an idea?

    • 1

      Turn off the water. Either close the stop valves connected to your faucet or at the water main coming into the house.

      Roll the plumber putty in your hands to form a thin rope. Place the putty on the lip of the drain opening. Press the strainer into the opening.

      Slip the rubber gasket and friction ring underneath the strainer. The rubber gasket and friction ring come with the strainer kit and are installed after the strainer is placed in the sink.

      Screw the locknut on. Tighten the locknut with an adjustable wrench until the strainer sets totally into the sink. Typically, you will see the excess putty squeezing out from lip of the drain. The excess putty peels away easily.

      Turn the water on. Look for leakage underneath the sink. If a leak exist is found tighten the locknut. Then test again to ensure your plumbing efforts were a success.
