Many women consider high heels to be a wardrobe staple. High heels are known for making legs look longer and slimmer, and they can give a dressy look to an otherwise casual outfit. However, walking in high heels can be a challenge, especially if the heels are 4 inches or more. Walking in very high heels takes practice and concentration.

      Buy well-fitting shoes--if they are too loose, you'll have problems keeping them on your feet; if they're too tight, they'll be uncomfortable. The High Heel Shoe Museum says you can add foot cushions if the shoes are only a little bit too loose.

      Practice using smaller heels. Once you have mastered 2- or 3-inch heels, you can move on to higher heels. You may also want to start with broader heels and work your way to skinny heels.

      Take small steps. Your steps will naturally be shorter in high heels, so you will naturally walk more slowly.

      Place your heel on the ground first and follow with your toe. It will be easier to balance if you step heel first than if you put your whole foot down at once or put your toes down first.

      Practice walking on a variety of surfaces--carpets, slippery floors, stairs and outdoors. Like any other skill, practice makes perfect.

  • College Fashion suggests watching videos of models walk in high heels to get ideas. It also says walking in a straight line, one foot in front of the other, will cause your hips to sway when you walk.

  • A study at Iowa State University warns that wearing high heels can lead to joint and knee problems over time.

  • Watch out for slippery surfaces and grassy or wet areas where heels can sink into the ground. Also be careful of things like grates.
