Text messaging is a common function of many cell phones. If you want to send text messages for free, but your cell phone service does not have such an offer, you can use a service on the Internet that allows you to send texts for no charge. Such sites allow you to send texts from your computer to users of certain wireless providers (to which normal charges will apply), and to receive email-like messages from your friends via the sites. The sites don't, however, change the service on your cell phone in any way.
