How to Stop a Husky From Shedding thumbnail
Siberian huskies shed their undercoats twice a year.

Excessive dog shedding can be irritating to deal with, especially when the seasons change from cold to hot, or hot to cold. Siberian huskies shed their entire undercoats twice a year, both during these climatic changes, which is know as their "blowing coat." Hair quickly accumulates everywhere if these furry friends aren't groomed continually and carefully. There are several wonderful tools available to alleviate excessive shedding, along with other grooming techniques and supplements.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the two seasonal changes that causes your husky to shed its undercoat. These climatic changes will occur at varying times throughout the year, depending upon your geographical location.

    • 2

Redouble your grooming frequency when these seasonal changes occur. Groom your husky once daily, instead of the twice weekly combing your pet usually requires. This will stipend the amount of undercoat that sheds from your dog and into your home.

    • 3

Moisten any mats and tangles in your dog's coat with watered-down moisturizer in a spray bottle. Horse hair conditioners work well for husky coats, and can be purchased at pet stores.

Remove any dense clumps of hair with a shed blade. Keep a garbage bag or garbage can next to you for removed dog hair. After these tangles are removed, combing can take place.

    • 5

Comb your dog's fur, starting at its head, with the coat rake. This will remove any loose undercoat from your husky.

    • 6

Bathe your husky in warm water, using a generous amount of horse hair shampoo. Do not use human shampoo, as it will strip the natural oils from your pet's coat, causing dryness and flaky skin. This bath will help loosen the undercoat that hasn't shed yet, speeding up the shedding process.

    • 7

Dry your husky with a towel and blow dryer (optional).

Add supplements such as linseed oil or fish oil to your husky's diet. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce shedding and improve overall coat health. These can be purchased at pet stores.
