Make Easy Biscuit Mixes

Whether you're cooking breakfast, lunch or dinner, biscuits are a great complement to any meal. Store-bought biscuit mix can be expensive and have a short expiration date. You can make your own biscuits with the ingredients you have in your pantry. This way you can bake only what you or your guests will eat, and it's guaranteed to be fresh as long as your ingredients haven't expired. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Things You'll Need

  • Biscuit mix ingredients:
  • 5 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup baking powder

  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup and 2 tbsp. vegetable oil or shortening

Instructions

  1. Creating Your Own Biscuit Mix

    • 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.

    • 2

Add oil or shortening, and mix with the dry ingredients. You can also do this in a blender or in a food mixer but do not overmix. The biscuit mix should have a lumpy texture.

    • 3

If you're planning on using the mix soon, you can simply wrap the top of the mixing bowl with a plastic wrap. If you plan on keeping it longer (up to 3 months), transfer the ingredients to an airtight container.

    To Bake the Biscuits

    • 4

When you're ready to bake the biscuits, take out the mix. Mix 2 1/2 cups of the biscuit mix with the buttermilk or milk and a pinch of salt. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead the dough 15 to 20 times. Roll the dough to one-inch thick, and cut into circles with a cutter or glass dipped in flour.

    • 5

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. While the oven is preheating, lightly grease a baking sheet with butter or oil. If you want to avoid the grease, use a baking spray or parchment paper. If you're using parchment paper, make sure to keep a small section out of the baking sheet. You will use that section to lift the baked biscuits from the sheet.

    • 6

Place the biscuits on the baking sheet.

    • 7

Beat your egg in a small bowl. Gently brush the egg on top of your biscuits.

    • 8

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
