Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls in a neutral color or the lighter shade of the gingham print you wish to incorporate, which is usually white or cream. Include patterns on the walls if you want something different. For example, paint a gingham check design on one wall or use wallpaper. Add a gingham border around the room a few inches below the ceiling or at chair rail-height.

    • 2

Use furniture that plays off the gingham checks or incorporates the pattern. For example, paint the drawers on a chest or nightstand with the pattern or upholster a chair or ottoman with gingham fabric. Use dark wood or black furniture to keep a room from becoming too feminine, or use white- or cream-colored furniture to complement a feminine or country-inspired room. Select solid-colored fabric to serve as the base for gingham accents with complementary colors.

    • 3

Include a combination of gingham and solid-colored linens that are appropriate for the room you're decorating. For example, hang a yellow and white gingham valance above yellow or white curtains. Use a pink and white gingham bed skirt and shams with a pink duvet. Use beige and white gingham dishtowels with just about any kitchen theme. Add gingham hand towels or washcloths to a bathroom with no other pattern.

    • 4

Accessorize the room with a few well-placed items that have a gingham check pattern. Select toss pillows or throw blankets in solids, gingham checks and other patterns if the same colors are present in each pattern. Use a gingham lampshade, or simply wrap a gingham ribbon around a lampshade. Use gingham dessert plates, linen napkins, tablecloths or salt-and-pepper shakers in your kitchen and dining room.

Tips & Warnings

  • Create visual interest with different textures, patterns and colors. For example, a black, white and yellow living room can include black and white gingham; floral and damask throw pillows on a yellow sofa; and yellow and white gingham curtains or valances.
