Custom menus help users navigate Access databases.

Microsoft Access is database software that consumers can use without knowing a computer programming language. The database components consist of tables, queries, forms, reports, macros and modules. A custom menu, or switchboard, is a form. The switchboard is created to assist the user in navigating the database and prevents the user from accessing objects in the Navigation Pane. The switchboard can be customized and it is not always necessary to create new switchboards. Switchboards can also be copied.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Navigation Pane on the left side of the database window. If it is not open, click the double arrows at the top of the Navigation Pane. This will open the pane so the database objects can be viewed.

    • 2

Click "Switchboard." This switchboard contains a button to help the user go to the next step in the database.

    • 3

Right-click the Switchboard form and go to "Copy" or click on the "Copy" icon in the Clipboard menu. Next, right-click within the Navigation Pane and click "Paste" or click "Paste" on the Clipboard panel. The "Paste As" dialog box will open and ask the user to name the form or use the default name "Copy Of Switchboard." To change the name of the copied form, type a new name in the "Form Name" box then click "OK."

Tips & Warnings

  • When a form is copied, the database objects that are linked to the original are also linked to the copy. If the form will be used for other database objects, link the copied version to the desired objects.
