Ohrid is a town in the southwest region of Macedonia. It is nestled idyllically on the shores of Lake Ohrid and is surrounded by mountains. The entire town was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 for its vast array of historic and architectural monuments. According to archeological finds, Ohrid was the home to one of the oldest human settlements in all of Europe. The town's beaches are home to the annual Ohrid Swimming Marathon, which takes place in July.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your passport to be sure it is valid. Everyone entering Macedonia must have a passport that is valid for at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave the country.

    • 2

Buy airline tickets. Note that there are no direct flights to Ohrid from North America. You will have to fly to a larger European city and get a connecting flight. As of 2009, the following European cities offer direct flights to Ohrid: Amsterdam, Belgrade, Dusseldorf, Ljubljana, Vienna and Zurich. In addition, flights from Tel Aviv are available.

    • 3

Reserve a hotel room once your travel dates are confirmed. This is best done online, as it allows you to see photographs of the available hotels. Accommodation can be had for as little as 10 Euros per night (as of 2009).

Take a taxi to the city center upon arrival. Taxis are very cheap in Macedonia, compared to the United States. But taxi drivers will often try to swindle tourists, so agree to a fixed price before getting into the taxi.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider learning a few words or phrases in Macedonian. A phrasebook can be handy, as very few people in this region speak English.

  • If you are already in Macedonia, an alternate option is to take a bus to Ohrid. The bus from Skopje, the country's capital, takes approximately three-and-a-half hours.
