How to Enable User Release & Renew

If you are having problems with your Internet connection and you can't connect properly, you may need to use a few specific tools from the ipconfig command line utility. IP release and renew is a command that will release any existing IP addresses associated with the computer, and attempt to renew the IP address so that you can connect to the Internet or network again.

Instructions

1. Click "Start" and type "cmd" into the search box. Right-click the "cmd" listing that appears in the search results. Click on "Run as administrator" in the drop-down menu.

2. Type "ipconfig /release."

3. Type "ipconfig /renew." Your computer should have an IP address associated with it and should be able to reconnect to the Internet. Type "ipconfig" to verify that you have an IP address assigned to your computer before closing the command prompt window.
