How to Focus Ki

How to Focus Ki thumbnail
The focus of ki is breathing and relaxation.

Ki is defined as a natural life energy that everyone possesses that can help bring peace and harmony through exercise, martial arts, breathing and relaxation. According to the International Hapki Do Federation, Ki is stimulated by a combination of factors, including the proper frame of mind, chemicals in the body such as adrenalin and endorphins, knowledge of body mechanics, increased oxygenation from deep breathing as well as the "undefined" energy within the body.

Instructions

  1. Breathing and Relaxation

    • 1

Sit cross-legged so that your lower back is pulled in and your top is leaning forward. This is called the neutral position.

    • 2

Concentrate your mind is at your center, which is 3 inches below your navel. Relax your muscles while remaining sitting upright. Try to focus your Ki energy away from your center.

    • 3

Open your mouth and allow the air to leave without forcing it. Say "AAAHH" softly as you exhale. Control your exhalation so it doesn't happen too quickly. It should take around 30 seconds total. When you can't continue exhaling, bend slightly forward so that your diaphragm is compressed and exhale a little more.

    • 4

Return to neutral position for 5 seconds and concentrate on your center, and imagine that you're still exhaling.

    • 5

Close your mouth and inhale through your nose. Again, control your inhalation so this doesn't happen too quickly, as it should take about 20 seconds. When you can no longer inhale, lean back and allow the diaphragm to expand so you can inhale a little more.

    • 6

Return to neutral position and concentrate on your center once again, imagining that you're still inhaling. Remain there for 5 seconds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not force the breathing. If you cannot inhale or exhale as long as recommended, you may reduce the time each inhale and exhale takes.
