How to Feed Baby Macaws

How to Feed Baby Macaws thumbnail
Raising a macaw requires a feeding schedule.

A macaw is a colorful breed of parrot that is fairly easy to care for. Feeding baby macaws is an important step in raising your new pet, and it is easy to do once you have the proper supplies. Baby macaws need a diet of seeds, pellets and some fresh foods, as well as a constant water supply. The baby macaw also must have a cage to eat in as it will make them feel protected and secure.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your baby macaw in its cage so the bird can grow accustomed to the cage. Baby macaws must eat in their cages, and they must be kept in the cage for at least three hours a day to eat.

    • 2

Place small dishes of bird pellets, seeds and fresh foods like fruit inside the cage. Add more as the baby macaw eats his way through the food. A macaw will only eat what it needs and is not prone to overeating.

    • 3

Add a water bottle or water dish to the cage and make sure to refill it daily. The baby macaw will not only drink the water, he will also learn to use it to clean himself.

    • 4

Lay a sheet over the cage if the baby macaw is screeching too often and not eating from his dishes. This will make the macaw focus on what is inside the cage and will help him become accustomed to eating inside of it.

    • 5

Consult a veterinarian if you're concerned about your baby macaw's eating habits.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you purchase your baby macaw, ask what the pet shop owner has been feeding the bird. This will help you transition from that food to the new diet.
