How to Tie a Treble Hook

How to Tie a Treble Hook thumbnail
Treble hooks are great for setting trotlines or fishing for bottom feeders.

Treble hooks are used most often with lures, fishing for catfish and carp or for setting a trotline. Tying a treble hook is a simple task, even in the dark after some practice. Every fisherman has their own style for tying their hooks, but all have the same basic mechanics that make them work. Any experienced fisherman will tell you that a strong knot is the best knot, no matter which style is your preference. With this in mind, the Palomar knot is regarded by Field & Stream as one of the strongest.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold about 5 inches of the end of the fishing line over on itself to double it.

    • 2

Insert the doubled over line into the hook's eye about 3 inches.

    • 3

Tie a loose overhand knot in the line, allowing the hook to hang freely. An overhand knot is the same knot that is normally used in the first step of tying a shoe (over and under) before making the loops. This will leave a loop on the end of the doubled fishing line.

    • 4

Pull the loop down and pass it completely over the hook.

    • 5

Pull both ends of the fishing line firmly while carefully pulling the hook in the opposite direction to tighten. The loop that was passed over the hook will tighten securely to the eye of the hook and the knot will tighten upon itself. The hook is now ready for bait.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Palomar knot works well for all types of hooks and fishing environments.

  • Be careful when working with fishing hooks, as they are very sharp. Consider wearing leather gloves for personal protection when handling hooks, especially the treble hook.
