Installation of an iPod Adapter in the Toyota Highlander

An iPod makes listening to music in your Toyota Highlander a pleasurable experience, and it eliminates the clutter created by a pile of CDs or tapes. An iPod also allows you to take your entire music catalog with you without taking up more room than a cell phone. There are a handful of different adapters that you can install in your Highlander to enable you to listen to your iPod.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a cassette tape adapter. If your Highlander has a tape deck, this is one of the easiest and cheapest adapters to use. Slip the cassette end into the tape deck. Plug the 1/8-inch jack into the headphone output of the iPod.

Set up an FM transmitter. This is another cheap, easy-to-install adapter. It allows you to broadcast the iPod via a small transmitter to the Highlander's FM radio receiver. The sound quality produced is not the greatest, but you can find these adapters for as little as $20, making them a great quick-fix solution. Plug the 1/8-inch audio connector into the iPod's audio output. Tune the car's radio to an FM station with plenty of static. Tune the transmitter to the same station. Press play on the iPod. The transmitter will beam the audio to the antenna, basically "hi-jacking" the station for your own personal use.

Buy a wired FM modulator. Access the back of the Highlander's stereo by following the instructions in the owner's manual. Unplug the antenna from the stereo and plug it into the "input" on the modulator. Plug the "output" of the modulator into the antenna input on the stereo. Locate an FM station with as much static as possible. Tune the modulator to that station. Run the audio cable from the modulator to a comfortable place in the cockpit of the vehicle. Plug the audio cable into the iPod's headphone output. Operate the iPod normally. The audio will come through the Highlander's speakers when the radio is tuned to the same frequency as the modulator.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can replace the entire stereo with an iPod-ready interface, but this should be done by a professional. The Highlander's stereo is unique to Toyota, and you shouldn't tamper with it unless you have extensive knowledge of how it works.
